Roadblock - Peace and Noise
We are Roadblock Sound System, a bike powered solidarity sound system based in Headingley, providing local grassroots activists and organisations green power and vibrant infrastructure free, or at low cost. By doing this, we also give musicians and artists a local and sustainable platform to showcase their talents.
Roadblock is a community organisation. Our roots are climate activism and reggae dub, we were born out of a need for Extinction Rebellion to have sustainable, independently sourced power but we now function as a separate entity. We are open to all music and have performed with DnB, rock, folk, rap and storytelling. We are based in Headingley and have ambitions to expand our reach further. We have supported several ‘Apple days’ this year and other community events like the upcoming January farmers market in Headingley. But also have supported large events like Leeds Pride and Cop 26 Leeds.
In terms of community work, our approach is as much about melodic distraction as it is creating an environment to sustain a regenerative culture, bringing individuals together to connect and bond over music and shared joy of the event as a whole. We are bright and bold and like to stand out. We believe in cultivating a positive vision for the future, mitigating and adapting to counterbalance the stress and relentless anger/fear/negativity that can build up in communities.
